Frequently Asked Question
How do I transfer a TLD domain (.com .net .org)?
Last Updated 9 years ago
How you go about requesting TLD (top level domain) such as a .com, .net or .org may vary between registrars, but the underlying process is exactly the same. In many cases a transfer can be performed online if you have access to a control panel. Sometimes you may need to speak with a support person at your current registrar.
Please note these steps do not apply to UK domains, please see How do I transfer a UK domain?
1). Check the domains admin contact email Ensure it is set to an email you have access to (or someone you are in contact with). The admin email will receive a transfer request which will need to be approved. A domain cannot be transferred without this. If transferring the domain to us, changing the admin contact to domains@localexposure.co.uk will enable us to help you with the later stage of the process.
2). Remove any domain privacy. If there is any privacy on the domain it often interferes with the transfer request being sent to the domains admin contact, so must be removed.
3). Unlock the domain. Locked domains cannot be transferred.
4). Get an authorisation code (EPP code). If you are transferring the domain to us, please email it to design@localexposure.co.uk. Please note many country-code top-level domain names (ccTLDs) don't require an authorization code.
5). Initiate Transfer. At the new registrar initiate the transfer. If you are transferring the domain to us, we will undertake this task using the given EPP code.
6). Accept the transfer. The domain admin contact will receive a transfer email. This needs to be authorised within 5 days in order for the transfer to complete successfully. If you are transferring to us we will help complete this process if and you previously set the admin email to domains@localexposure.co.uk. Otherwise the domain admins contact will need to action the request.
